Metals posses certain characteristic physical properties that separates them from non metals. Physical state. Metals are generally solid at room temperature. Mercury is a liquid metal. Unlike other metal Sodium and potassium can be easily cut with a knife. Metals posses characteristic lustre. Metals can be polished to increase their lustre. Metals are malleable. This means they can be converted into sheets or foils by hammering. Arsenic, Antimony and Bismuth are brittle and exception. They get powdered on hammering. Metals are ductile so they can be drawn into wires by stretching Metals are good conductor of electricity. Their conductivity decreases with increase in temperature. All metals are good conductor of heat. Density is the degree of compactness of a substance. It is the mass per unit volume of the substance. The metals whose density is less than 5 gm per cubic cm are called light metals like Li, K, Na, Mg, Al etc. Metals with higher density are called heavy metals. Metals are sonorous. They produce sounds when struck.
